Oil has been in use by mankind for thousands of years. Asphalt was used nearly 5,000 years ago in the construction of the towers of Babylon while pitch was probably used as a means of lighting for the first time in ancient Persia by affluent families. The Chinese were extracting crude oil by AD 347 using bamboos to drill holes int he ground. Between 600 and 700 AD Arab and Persian scientists produced the Greek Bomb an ancient version of our 'napalm' by mixing the lighter elements of crude oil with quicklime. By 1795 British explorers found hundreds of hand dug wells producing crude oil in Burma, present day Myanmar.
By 1847 James Young from Derbyshire, England, had found a way to distill crude oil and produce kerosene suitable to light lamps, obtaining a by-product good for lubricating machinery. Most of the early oil recovered in those days came from extracting oil from shale. In 1859 Colonel Edwin Drake drilled down to 21.5 meters with a home built mechanical rig and discovered an oil reservoir. |
In 200 BC gas seeping through the earth in China was ignited to evaporate water from brine and make salt. In the 1st century AD the king of Persia had his palace kitchen built around a natural gas flame which had been ignited by lightning. In the early 17th Century French explorers to the new world found Native Americans burning the gases which were seeping through the earth's crust around Lake Erie. In the late 1700's Britain was the first country to commercialize the use of natural gas. The natural gas was produced from coal and used to light houses and streetlights.
In 1821 William Hart dug the first successful gas well in Fredonia, New York. In 1859 it was again Edwin Drake who drilled the first commercial gas well, finding a large gas reservoir at a depth of 21 meters, which he connected to a 5 centimete diameter pipeline that ran 9 kilometers from the well to the village of Titusville, Pennsylvania. However it was the invention of the Bunsen burner in 1885 that finally paved the way for natural gas to be safely used in industry and homes by mixing natural gas with air. |
