TECHNIX INDUSTRIES MULTI-STAGE BITUMEN PLANT

Technix Industries Limited (Technix) is a world leader in developing novel bitumen production technologies. A family run business, Technix is proud to be in the bitumen business for more than one hundred years – virtually from the very beginning of when bitumen started to be used for paving in modern times.

During this period, Technix has the honour of having achieved many ‘firsts’ in the bitumen business. From being the first to apply bitumen to road in New Zealand in 1914, to developing New Zealand’s first polymer-  modified bitumen in1982, to developing the world’s first fully-computerised micro-surfacing machines for pavements in 1992, to developing and building New Zealand’s first Technix Multistage Bitumen Reactors Plants that produce a full range of bitumen products, and in 2004 designing & building the World’s first multi-grade bitumen modification plant, Technix has been a world-class inventor and performer in all things related to the production and use of Bitumen – and in the last 20 years can claim at least a dozen ‘World Firsts’ - A complete list of Technix’s major ‘firsts’ is provided at the bottom of the page.

The Technix Multistage Bitumen Plant is able to:
  • Modify bitumens
  • Manufacture Multigrade bitumens from single grade bitumen feedstock
  • Produce bitumen from refinery distillation column residues (vacuum bottoms)
  • Produce bitumen from refinery solvent precipitated residues
  • Utilise recycled oils as a feedstock in bitumen production
  • Produce highly efficiently “Just-in-time" polymer modified bitumens
  • Manufacture industrial grade bitumens

The following deficiencies of bitumen can be addressed by using the Technix Multistage Bitumen Plant:
  • Poor adhesion
  • Inadequate cohesion
  • Too hard
  • Too soft
  • Unsatisfactory penetration index
  • Unsatisfactory ductility
  • Poor polymer compatibility
  • Susceptibility to pavement temperature changes
  • Poor quality identified by SARA and Gaestel index characteristics
Technix Multigrade Bitumen Plant provides the ability to make BETTER BITUMENS with globally unique bitumen technologies.

Multigrade bitumens produced by Technix Plant are higher performance "premium grade" bitumens with performance characteristic that span multiple grades of bitumen. They are produced by chemically modifying conventional grade bitumens to obtain improved properties. They are cost effective and cost lesser to produce.

They are characterised by being less temperature sensitive when compared with conventional grade bitumens. They have the properties of hard grade bitumens at high pavement temperatures coupled with the properties of soft grade bitumens at low pavement temperatures.

ADVANTAGES OF TECHNIX MULTIGRADE BITUMEN PLANT

1.  Technix ‘Just In Time’ polymer modified bitumen.
  • Technix has designed a fully integrated polymer modified bitumen (PMB) plant as an optional extra to the Technix Plant
  • Blending polymers with bitumen is normally a lengthy process. Typical polymer- bitumen gestation periods are 4 to 6 hours in a heated bending plant at elevated temperatures. This time period and the elevated temperatures degrades some of the polymer properties
  • The Technix PMB plant is a world first "just-in-time" facility. lt produces PMB at the rate of 10 to 20 tonnes per hour, depending on the type of polymer being bended
  • Furthermore, the degradation of polymers, because of being held at elevated temperatures is significantly avoided with the Technix "just-in-time" PMB plant, and degradation of the polymers' properties is minimal. As a result, substantially less polymer (up to 30%) may be used to obtain the same PMB properties. Polymers are expensive and this new process can significantly reduce the costs of PMBs
2.   Relating to the Technix Plant Operation
  • Process losses are extremely low for bitumen conversions at less than 0.5% compared to typically 2% to 5% loss from traditional bitumen oxidation (Blowing) plants for bitumen modification
  • AII emissions, including liquids retained in the emissions knock out vessel, are incinerated in the incineration unit. There are no additional waste products produced by the Technix Plant
  • Dual reactor systems enable one unit to be shut down for servicing, while production (at approximately half the two-stage rate) is maintained
  • An optional extra feature can be added to the software and hardware to allow two grades of bitumen from a common feedstock to be simultaneously produced from the Technix Plant
  • Thermal oil trace heating and jacket heating of the Technix Plant and product transfer pipelines for rapid start-up from cold (greater than -300C) of approximately four hours, or even faster start up from a warm plant condition of approximately two hours
  • Heat exchangers provide high thermal efficiency with the use of thermal oil to pre-heat feedstock and bitumen through high quality cleanable, plate heat exchangers
  • Dual reagent pumping and dosing system for feedstock modification using monitored automated feed
  • Rapid 'on the run' production change-over to suit varying feedstock and final product specifications or bitumen modification requirements
  • Process interlocks for safe and efficient operation with more than fifty automatic emergency shutdowns and alarms
  • Dual fired, or modulating, burner for heating of thermal oil - for the Technix Plant start-up and operation with fuel options of diesel, kerosene, and/or natural gas
  • Stable, quiet, smooth process operation involving a minimum of plant operator input
  • Technix remote monitoring to support Client production with valuable weekly reports on the Technix Plant production optimisation, maintenance requirements, and safety logs.
3.   Relating to Technix Plant Construction
  • The semi-detached air conditioned control room and laboratory, with double glazed windows, can be located at the client's preferred position adjacent to the Technix Plant
  • The control room has monitoring and control equipment comprising over 150 reference points, with operating parameters monitored and displayed using GE™ Intelligent Platform Human Machine Interface (HMI) software. Technix is able to use other HMI brands such as Siemens as per client's preference
  • The operating conditions of the Technix Plant can be monitored remotely by client and Technix through telemetering. Additionally, Technix provides weekly reports to client based on such monitoring that help the client optimise the operation of the Technix Plant.
  • Fully containerised units are used for the Technix Plant that are insulated with closed cell urethane foam, to provide an environment of stable plant operating temperatures and efficient heating and processing
  • Thermal oil leakage monitoring for leak detection as standard
  • Multiple reactors for enhanced production rates
  • Air conditioned electrical switch room
  • Fire detection alarms installed throughout the Technix Plant. A chemical fire and foam suppression system, utilising foam, can be located in a separate container that also houses the control room and laboratory. This container would be located at a client's preferred position near to the Technix Plant. The fire suppression system and detectors are optional
  • High quality, fixed displacement products, pumps and thermal oil centrifugal, pumps
  • Time clock for unattended thermal oil heater control
  • Dual high quality compressors for air supply to the reactors
  • External lighting and access stairways
  • Safe anti-slip floors
  • Technix Plant available for installation in non-hazard and hazardous zones
  • If the Containerised Technix Plant is designed for hazardous zones it will be electrically constructed to satisfy the requirements of IEC 60079.14.2009 with an Area Classification of Gas type IIA Zone 2
  • Optionally Technix Plant is supplied with a laboratory fitted within the Control Room. The equipment supplied with the laboratory includes instruments for the measurement of viscosity, penetration index and softening point of the bitumen being produced. The equipment also includes an oven, sink with cold water, and bench
